English 150 Reflections
I love reflecting on this section because English 150 has been one of my favorite classes this semester! Dr. Kurtyka is such a sweetheart; I wouldn’t want any other teacher in the world. The first paper that we were given in our English class freaked me out because of its name, Leadership Artifact Analysis. What the heck is that?! Basically, we chose a leader, along with one of the leader’s artifacts and analyzed the leaders ethos, pathos, and logos. The leader that I chose was Herb Brooks. The artifact that I chose to go with Herb Brooks was his speech in Miracle before playing and defeating Russia. This essay challenged me in many ways, such as its style and my teacher’s critiques. To begin with, I have never written a leadership artifact analysis in my entire life, plus Dr. Kurtyka didn’t have an example to go off of, so I was stressed out. It probably didn’t help that I wrote the essay in the Neutral Zone at 2 am before class at 11 that day. Thank goodness that was only the rough draft because I needed some critiquing! Dr. Kurtyka challenged me on my transitions, which still need a lot of help and I think I am still failing at while writing this. Although I still feel like I am failing at my transitions, I think they have improved and I have been able to grow my writing confidence by working on my transitions. I have also been able to grow from this experience by learning to write my essays before the night they are due. Did you write that down? That’s a big life tip right there!
The second essay that I selected from my English 150 class is my current assignment that I just turned my rough draft in for. The project consists of creating a Tumblr and creating our own leadership theory based off of: the images, quotes, and videos that we post onto our Tumblr home page. The leadership theory that I created was humble leadership. Some of the challenges that I faced before even writing my paper was creating a Tumblr page! I’ve never been tremendous with social media, other than Instagram. Again, I’m #soft. Along with the whole setting up a Tumblr account, I had to find pictures, quotes, and images that aligned with this theory! It took me forever! Luckily, I was able to basically copy and paste my analysis from my Tumblr page to my assignment, which significantly sped up the typing the essay portion. Another challenge that I faced while completing this assignment was Dr. Kurtyka critiquing me again! I’m still struggling with my transitions, which I thought I was improving since last time…guess not. A way that I have grown from this assignment is seeking help when I need it and not to think I can tackle everything on my own. I’m currently receiving help from Krista with my transitions because we can both grow our writing skills, rather it be receiving the help or giving help, because we can build off of each other’s knowledge and reiterate what we have learned to engrave it into our minds. This has been one of the more challenging experiences because we had to create the Tumblr page and find 10 sources, but it has been the most rewarding by teaching me the lesson of seeking for help and that both parties both mutually grow because of the collaboration.
